The Bahall Brothers
As we talk about every year, Black History is every month here at M.U.S.T. As the nation acknowledges BHM, we want to highlight those who have become a vital piece of M.U.S.T. history. This February, we recognize 2 of our Alumni Mentors, Davanand and Donovan Bahall.
Davanand
“M.U.S.T shaped my understanding of the power of mentorship and community in fostering internal growth and liberation. Guiding my mentees through their journeys of liberation made me aware of systemic challenges faced in marginalized communities and also showed the resiliency of these communities. My experience in M.U.S.T gave me a deeper sense of purpose by showing the importance of supporting others in breaking their limitations whether it be physical or mental and how the smallest interactions lead to big opportunities.” ~ Davanand Bahall, Jr., MS2 at Medical School at UW / Mentor Alumni
Davanand was a Mentor for four years. During that time, he mentored two students who both graduated high school and are now enjoying their new endeavors. It was incredibly rewarding for him to guide his Mentees through important stages of their education and personal growth. Along with being a Mentor, he felt very fortunate to have a wonderful coach who opened his eyes to both different perspectives and activities!
After graduating from the University of Washington in 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, he is currently a second-year medical student at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Striving to make a positive impact on all, especially those in marginalized communities, drives his deep passion for helping people in both his personal and future professional endeavors. Outside of his studies, Davanand has a deep love for sports, especially basketball, which provides benefits to both his physical health and keeps him balanced.
Donovan
“Mentoring with M.U.S.T. has been a transformative experience, deeply influencing my understanding of leadership, compassion, and empathy. It taught me that meaningful impact is not achieved in a single day, but rather through a series of moments – some challenging, some rewarding – that require patience and persistence. M.U.S.T. helped me appreciate the value of small wins, encouraging me to view life’s challenges not as obstacles, but as opportunities to demonstrate resilience and growth. Through this journey, I learned to hold myself accountable, consistently striving to be the best version of myself for both my Mentees and my own personal development. Each interaction with my Mentees shaped my perspective and reinforced the importance of perseverance, a lesson I know will serve me well in my future healthcare career. M.U.S.T. not only challenged me but also empowered me to embrace my own path toward liberation by fostering a mindset of continuous growth and learning. The lessons of persistence, empathy, and resilience I’ve gained from M.U.S.T. will remain pivotal as I move forward in life and medicine.” ~ Donovan Bahall, MA at Allegro Pediatrics / Soon-to-be: MS1 at one of 3 College of Medicines (WSU, UW, UCSD) / Mentor Alumni
Donovan was a part of M.U.S.T. for four years during his undergraduate studies at the University of Washington. Initially starting with two Mentees, he ended his tenure with M.U.S.T. having mentored five young males. For Donovan, mentoring with M.U.S.T. was instrumental in shaping his perspective on both community service and healthcare. During his time, he supported and empowered his Mentees in their education, personal development, and healthcare needs.
After graduating from the University of Washington in 2023 with a degree in Biochemistry, Donovan is currently working full-time as a medical assistant at Allegro Pediatrics and will soon be a medical student at one of the 3 following College of Medicines: WSU, UW, UCSD. Outside of work, he is an avid sports fan, with favorite teams spanning across the country in professional and college sports, especially baseball, basketball, and football.
