Riding with the Buffalo Soldiers: Why Our Heritage Connection is a M.U.S.T.

Every year, as the freedom of summer break nears its end and focus shifts to the return of early mornings, textbooks, and pop quizzes, M.U.S.T. Mentees, Mentors, and staff come together to reflect, refocus, and set goals for the coming school year as they welcome a new freshman cohort to the M.U.S.T. community. This year, the group had the unforgettable opportunity to participate in an overnight retreat with the Buffalo Soldiers of Seattle. The Buffalo Soldiers of Seattle’s mission is to preserve the accomplishments made by the brave African American Troops of the original US Army regiment. The Mounted 9th and 10th Cavalry and 24th and 25th Infantries played a pivotal role in the settlement of the West, but their contribution, often minimized or omitted from the history books, has become a legacy forgotten. Throughout the weekend, Mentees stepped out of their comfort zones and into history—engaging in hands-on activities like archery, horseback riding, chopping wood, pitching tents, and building a campsite. Beyond the outdoor challenges, the retreat offered a powerful learning experience about a unique part of Black history and the Black men who helped shape early America.
This immersive and impactful outing, focused on Black strength, brotherhood, and independence, set the tone for the coming year, empowering M.U.S.T. youth to discover who they are and inspire them as they continue on their path to liberation.
