Representing Present & Past: Growth is a M.U.S.T.
With the new school upon us, we are highlighting a Black male in the M.U.S.T. program who represents both our history and our present. Previously a Mentee, Jermaine Hawkins graduated from high school in 2019. He continues to live in the Mount Baker neighborhood of Seattle and has come full circle with M.U.S.T., becoming a Mentor last year! In addition to being a Mentor, Jermaine also builds custom hot rods and houses. During this time of honing a new craft, he is gaining wisdom and continuing his own path in pursuing liberation in this season of life.
“M.U.S.T. has a big impact. It is the reason I graduated; my Mentor was consistent with me about my attendance and grades. [He made] sure I was where I was supposed to be and doing what I was supposed to be doing; he went out his way to make sure I turned in work and did my tests and got my grades where they needed to be.”
On being a Mentor for the past year:
“Being a mentor is now great; being able to build relationships with kids and doing life with them has been really rewarding.”
